21 Monsters for 2021 and Maybe Quests Too
October marked the 1 year anniversary of this game being in development (though it has not been on itch.io that long). Thanks so much for supporting and playing Pocket Threads, you guys!
I got quite sick over the majority of October (just the flu thankfully), so today I have some pretty pictures (and gifs) to show you what I’ve been working on.
I rewrote the dialogue scripts so that skipping the dialogue is doable. No longer do you have to listen to an NPC chatter if you’re a quick reader!
Speaking of quick readers, I also added the ability to change the speed at which NPCs talk. You’ll be able to find those settings in the option menu. That menu is getting cluttered, the next time I add a slider or setting, I’m probably going to have to redo the Options menu.
I’m also paving the way for a Quest system. Here's an example quest:
(that's a big sewing needle haha)
This quest system will be quite nice, letting NPCs speak different lines depending on where in the quest you are. It will eventually save to your save file, so you won't have to repeat quests every time you play! This system will eventually let them gift you monsters too. Even later down the line when items get added, I’m sure they’ll be glad to gift you those as well.
I added a few particle effects to the world, such as kicking up dust or water when you walk, and an effect when you heal your monsters. I need to stitch the effects still, these ones are just placeholders.
I’m also adding some life to the NPCs with some idle animations. They’re built the same way the monsters are, that is, in pieces glued together, so I will animate them the same way: in Unity’s 2d Animator. I originally wanted to stitch each frame of every animation, but I quickly realized how many embroiderers that I'd need to make all of them.
Speaking of embroidering and designing, I'm getting some help from my artist sibling to redesign the awful looking houses in town so stay tuned for their glow ups!
I plan on releasing a build when I get that quest system usable, or maybe when I add some of the four monsters that are in the pipeline. I want to get a total of 21 monsters in the game before the end of 2021. 21 monsters in 2021 sounds good, yeah? I'm running out of space to put these good bois in again. I just added an island an update or so ago, and it's already getting crowded!
Keep your eyes peeled for update .08 😊
I’ll be brief about this bit since it’s not relevant to Pocket Threads, but I also worked on a mod for Valheim that you can find here if you play modded Valheim, especially if you’re a builder.

I have never seen embroidery used for a game before, that that is so cool. I've seen a few games use clay or paper, but using thread gave it a look all its own.
I originally clicked to see this game for the monster/character designs, but now this is probably the most memorable game I've seen all year. Cheers to ya
